Is TMS Covered for PTSD or OCD?

Insurance Tips for Non-Depression Diagnoses

If you or someone you love is living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), you may already know how overwhelming treatment can feel—especially when standard medications and therapy don’t provide enough relief.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is increasingly being recognized as an effective treatment option for PTSD and OCD. But here’s the catch:

Insurance coverage isn’t always guaranteed—yet.

At Bella Vida TMS, we work closely with patients across Phoenix, Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Glendale to help them navigate the insurance process and access the care they deserve. This blog post will explain when TMS is covered for non-depression diagnoses, and how to advocate for approval.

Can TMS Treat PTSD or OCD?

✅ Yes—and research backs it up.

TMS is FDA-cleared for major depressive disorder (MDD), but clinical studies have shown promising results for:

  • PTSD: TMS helps regulate overactive brain regions associated with traumatic memories and emotional dysregulation.
  • OCD: A specific form of TMS, called deep TMS, is FDA-cleared for OCD and shown to reduce compulsive behaviors by targeting the anterior cingulate cortex.

Bella Vida TMS offers TMS for both PTSD and OCD, and we customize treatment protocols to address your specific symptoms and brain patterns using EEG-guided mapping.

So, Is It Covered by Insurance?

For PTSD

TMS for PTSD is considered off-label, meaning it’s not yet FDA-cleared for this condition. However, that doesn’t mean insurance won’t pay for it.

Some insurance companies may cover TMS for PTSD if:

  • You have a diagnosis of treatment-resistant depression and PTSD
  • You’ve already failed standard treatments
  • A Letter of Medical Necessity is submitted
  • Your provider requests a Single Case Agreement (SCA) or prior authorization appeal

We’ve had success helping veterans and trauma survivors get TMS approved through AHCCCS, Tricare, and some commercial plans.

For OCD

The good news: Deep TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD, which makes insurance coverage more likely.

Coverage may depend on:

  • Whether your provider offers Deep TMS with the OCD protocol
  • Proper documentation and prior treatment failures
  • Pre-authorization and documentation of symptom severity

At Bella Vida TMS, we offer support for OCD treatment and will help guide you through every insurance requirement.

Tips for Getting TMS Covered for Non-Depression Diagnoses

📝 1. Ask About Single Case Agreements

If your plan doesn’t cover TMS for PTSD or OCD, we can submit a Single Case Agreement—a special contract between your provider and the insurer to approve off-label use.

🧾 2. Gather Your Medical History

Document all the treatments you’ve tried, including medications, therapy, and any hospitalizations. Insurance companies want to see that you’ve exhausted conventional options.

🗣 3. Get a Strong Letter of Medical Necessity

Our psychiatric team can write a compelling case outlining why TMS is clinically appropriate for your diagnosis.

🧠 4. Highlight Any Depression Symptoms

If you have co-occurring depression, insurance is more likely to cover TMS, especially if the depression is severe and treatment-resistant.

What If My Insurance Denies TMS?

If you’re denied, don’t give up—we can help:

  • File an appeal with stronger documentation
  • Submit a peer-to-peer request between our provider and your insurer
  • Explore alternative covered options like Spravato®
  • Offer low-cost self-pay options and CareCredit financing
  • Assist with AHCCCS coverage navigation if you’re on Arizona Medicaid
